Classic Beef Mince Bolognese
A good bolognese is a weeknight hero, and it starts with good mince. Made with grass-fed Hunter Natural beef mince, this classic ragù is richer and cleaner-tasting than anything from the supermarket. A long, gentle simmer melds everything into a sauce the whole family comes back for. It's simple, honest cooking — exactly what grass-fed beef does best.
Cut: Mince (any trim)
Ingredients
- 1kg grass-fed beef mince
- 2 cans crushed tomatoes
- 1 onion, finely diced
- 2 carrots, finely diced
- 2 celery stalks, finely diced
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup red wine (optional)
- Tomato paste
- Dried oregano, bay leaf
- Salt, pepper
Method
- Brown mince in batches (don't crowd the pan—you want browning, not steaming)
- Remove mince, sauté vegetables until soft
- Add garlic and tomato paste, cook 2 minutes
- Add wine, let it reduce
- Return mince, add tomatoes, herbs, season well
- Simmer low for 2-3 hours (the longer the better)
Grass-fed tip: Our mince is leaner, so it won't release much fat. That's a good thing—more meat, less grease.
